Deb and I were kayaking part of the Wacissa River, which is located east, southeast of Tallahassee, Florida in February, 2014 when we happened upon this gorgeous baby great blue heron (scientific name is ardea herodias) perched on a small branch outside its nest. The nest was located on a small island in the middle of the river not too far from the rivers mouth. We were very surprised and very happy to stumble upon this rare find as we had never seen a baby great blue heron that young in the wild before or since. Since I, Bill, am the paddler of our twin-seat kayak I slowly paddled the kayak as close to the heron as I dared. We didn't wish to scare it but wanted to get close enough to get some great photos. Deb started shooting as soon as we were within range and must have clicked at least 50 or more digital images before deciding she should have at least a few blur-free images for later use. When one is on a kayak it is best to take more than less images since the kayak is never exactly still.
If you looked closely you probably noticed this is more than a simple photographic image. I, Bill, took the liberty of digitally painting a copy to achieve the results you see. What is the saying? Different strokes for different folks, I believe. Some may prefer the photograph image version, which is also posted, whereas some may prefer this painted version rendering it into a "digital painting". Now one can choose either -- or both.
All visits to our FAA-Pixels art sites are welcomed, encouraged, and appreciated. Please visit often and, if you will, tell your friends and family about our art sites. They may find something they like and thank you for the tip.
