Deb and I visited Jekyll Island, Georgia on August 31, 2018 to photograph all things of interest. While there we walked out on the partially covered fishing pier located near Driftwood Beach hoping to capture a few images of pelican in flight if they flew by close enough. Regrettably few did but while waiting I noticed a young lady with a very beautiful and unusual dog on a leash walking toward us. Once she was within hearing distance I asked her if it was OK to photograph her dog. Of course, she said yes so I proceeded to do so with my Nikon D850 camera plus a Nikon 200-500MM lens. After getting several images I asked her the breed & its name to which she replied it was a blue heeler and Cookie was its name.
I did some research on this breed to find it is actually an Australian Cattle Dog. The name Blue Heeler is a common name. There is also a Red Heeler. You may find the following information provided by Wikipedia interesting about this breed.
The Australian Cattle Dog, or simply Cattle Dog, is a breed of herding dog originally developed in Australia for droving cattle over long distances across rough terrain. This breed is a medium-sized, short-coated dog that occurs in two main colour forms. It has either brown or black hair distributed fairly evenly through a white coat, which gives the appearance of a "red" or "blue" dog.
Its scientific name is Canis lupus familiaris. A female height can reach: 16.93 inch – 18.90 inch while a male's height can reach 18.11 inch – 20.08 inch. Their weight can reach 44.09 pound – 61.73 pound and the average lifespan is 12 years to 15 years. Their
temperaments are: Energetic, Protective, Loyal, Brave, Cautious, Obedient, Alert, curious, and pleasant, Alert, Curious, Pleasant.
