On June 06, 2018 Deb & I traveled to Saint Augustine, Florida to visit the bird rookery at the infamous Alligator Farm located on Highway A1A. We knew this would probably be our last visit for 2018 as the babies were starting to gain a little age and would soon be fledgling and leaving the area with their parents, most likely, to migrate north.
As expected there were many, many small chicks throughout the rookery exercising their wings readying them for flight. I, Bill, came upon these two Tricolored Herons (scientific name is Egretta Tricolor) chicks looking toward something as though they were under a spell.
They looked so cute to me I immediately thought of Deb & Barb (Deb's twin sister) since these two were obviously twins, too. I captured the original image using my Nikon D850 camera along with a Nikon 200-500 MM lens boosted by a 1.4 extender to further the reaching power of the camera/lens.
Earlier today, I edited the image with Photoshop. Once I had it cleaned up I then decided to also see what I could do with a copy using an artistic software program I have. Once I acquired this result I was happy with it and decided to go no further. Deb & I hope most of you find our "Twins" pleasing to your eyes. Now for some interesting facts about this species according to Wikipedia.
The tricolored heron (Egretta tricolor), formerly known in North America as the Louisiana heron, is a small heron. It is a resident breeder from the Gulf states of the United States and northern Mexico south through Central America and the Caribbean to central Brazil and Peru. There is some post-breeding dispersal to well north of the nesting range.
Tricolored heron's breeding habitat is sub-tropical swamps. It nests in colonies, often with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. In each clutch, 3–7 eggs are typically laid.
Adults have a blue-grey head, neck, back and upperwings, with a white line along the neck. The belly is white. In breeding plumage, they have long blue filamentous plumes on the head and neck, and buff ones on the back.
The tricolored heron stalks its prey in shallow or deeper water, often running as it does so. It eats fish, crustaceans, reptiles, and insects.
All visits to our FAA-Pixels art sites are welcomed, encouraged and appreciated. Please visit often.
